Family Class Sponsorship

Do you have Family overseas? Do you wish to reunify your family in Canada?

The Canadian government is dedicated to bringing families together whenever possible. For this purpose, Eligible Canadians and PR can sponsor their spouses, common-law or conjugal partners, minor children, parents and relatives.

Requirements for the sponsor

  • A sponsor must be an adult Canadian citizen , Permanent Resident or a registered Indian atleast 18 years of age.
  • Should not be in prison, having pending court cases, be bankrupt or charged with a serious offence.
  • Should not be receiving any social assistance (except for disability).

Sponsorship Agreement

The sponsor must promise to provide for the basic needs and financial support of their family members such that the new family is not dependant on the government for assistance. However, the period of sponsorship varies depending on whom you are sponsoring:

  • Spouse, common law or conjugal partner – 3 years
  • Dependant child- 10 years or until he reaches 22 years
  • Children over the age of 22 years- 3 years
  • Parents or Grand Parents- 20 years
  • Other relative- 10 years
  • The length of undertaking for residents of Quebec is slightly different
